Aberdeen emerges from 21-day stretch of cloudy weather

Records dating back to 1957 indicate that the previous sunshine sighting occurred on 21 January, marking the most prolonged stretch without sunlight on record.

After a prolonged period of cloudy weather, Aberdeen has finally experienced its first sunshine in 21 days, marking a significant change in the city's weather pattern.

The last recorded instance of sunshine in the city was on January 21, resulting in the longest period without sun since the Met Office began keeping records in 1957, spanning three weeks.

On Thursday afternoon, residents of Aberdeen caught a glimpse of the sun, bringing an end to the prolonged period of cloudy weather that had been prevalent in the area.

According to the Met Office, 30 minutes of sunshine was officially recorded in the Dyce area between 15:00 and 16:00, confirming the return of sunny conditions to the region.

However, a yellow warning has been issued for snow and ice across Scotland, effective overnight, indicating that the region is not yet out of the winter weather cycle.

Kate Finlay, a 21-year-old resident, expressed her delight at seeing the sunshine return to Aberdeen, highlighting the positive impact it has on her daily life.

"When I stepped out of my flat, the first thing I did was inform my friends about the sunshine, as it was a notable change from the previous days," Finlay said, describing her initial reaction to the improved weather.

Finlay recounted her experience, saying, "I opened my curtains and felt that it was brighter than usual, and upon going outside, I was surprised to see a blue sky, which was a pleasant surprise."

The prolonged period of rainy weather had made it challenging for Finlay to venture out, but the return of sunshine has brought a sense of relief and improved her overall mood.

Finlay, a student at the University of Aberdeen, emphasized that the sunshine has brought an end to the miserable weather, expressing her happiness at its return.

The beginning of 2026 saw heavy snowfall in the north-east of Scotland, which was followed by persistent rainfall, resulting in a prolonged period of inclement weather.

Since the snow subsided, the region has experienced almost continuous rainfall, leading to significant disruptions in various aspects of life.

The town of Aboyne in Aberdeenshire received over 277mm of rainfall in January, which is approximately four times the average monthly rainfall, highlighting the unusual nature of the weather pattern.

The inclement weather has had far-reaching consequences, affecting football matches, North Sea oil workers, farmers, and even road maintenance activities such as pothole repairs.

Experts have attributed the unusual weather pattern to a "blocked" atmospheric condition, which has limited the movement of the jet stream and prevented the establishment of more settled and dry weather.

This weather pattern has resulted in a prolonged period of rainfall, with scientists suggesting that climate change may contribute to more frequent and intense rainfall events in the future.

According to climate experts, the warming trend may lead to an increase in winter rainfall, with the Met Office predicting a potential rise of up to 16% in Aberdeen and 13% in Aberdeenshire compared to the levels recorded in the 1980s and 1990s.

Lead weather presenter Helen Willetts noted that the UK has experienced a prolonged period of wet and grey weather, but the recent sunshine in Aberdeen marks a significant turning point.

Willetts stated, "Aberdeen officially recorded 30 minutes of sunshine on Thursday, bringing an end to its prolonged sunless spell, and surrounding areas may have also experienced some sunshine."

"However, it is expected that Friday will mark the beginning of a more significant shift in the weather pattern, with the return of sunshine to the region," Willetts added.

BBC Scotland weather presenter Judith Ralston explained that the change in weather type will lead to the breakdown of the persistent cloud and rain pattern, resulting in drier and brighter conditions.

Ralston noted that the northerly air mass will bring sunshine and wintry showers to the region on Friday and Saturday, marking a significant improvement in the weather.

The anticipated change in weather is expected to bring an end to the bitingly cold winds and rain, replacing them with more pleasant conditions, according to Ralston.

GB men’s curling team suffers upset defeat to Italy

At the 2026 Winter Olympics, Great Britain’s men’s curling team mounted a comeback against Italy following a disappointing beginning, ultimately falling short in their inaugural match.

Despite a valiant comeback, Team GB ultimately fell short as Italy held their composure to secure the win in the final end.

A dismal start to the match proved costly for Team GB's men, as they suffered their first defeat of the Winter Olympics at the hands of host nation Italy, despite a spirited fightback in the packed Cortina Curling Stadium.

Following victories in their first two matches, including a win over the Swedish rink that beat them in the gold-medal match four years ago, Team GB entered their second high-profile encounter in as many days in a confident position.

However, a disastrous opening end, in which Italy stole four points, left Team GB trailing and facing an uphill battle in front of a boisterous home crowd.

The British team, currently ranked number one in the world, gradually regained their footing and managed to level the score by the ninth end.

Ultimately, Italy maintained their composure in the final end to emerge victorious, winning 9-7 and adding Team GB to their list of scalps, which already included the Swedes.

"We had to dig deep and play some solid curling, but unfortunately, it wasn't enough to get us over the line," Team GB lead Hammy McMillan said in an interview with BBC Sport.

With seven wins from nine round-robin matches guaranteeing a spot in the semi-finals, Team GB remains in a strong position, although fewer wins may still be sufficient to advance.

The women's team is set to take to the ice next, facing South Korea in their second match at 13:05 GMT, while the men will return to action on Saturday against the Czech Republic at the same time.

Team GB is at the forefront of curling's technological advancements.

Embracing what sets you apart can be a powerful asset, according to some athletes.

The looks of shock on the faces of Team GB's curlers told the story of a disastrous opening end.

With a stone in play, Mouat attempted a risky shot in an effort to claim two points, but it backfired, resulting in none of Team GB's stones in the house and four Italian stones in position.

However, the Scottish quartet, ranked number one in the world, quickly regained their composure and got back to their game.

The teams exchanged singles before a impressive final throw by Mouat, aided by a measurement to determine which stone was closest to the button, allowed Team GB to claim two points and narrow the gap to 5-3.

Another excellent team effort, which included a well-judged throw by Mouat, a solid sweep by Hammy McMillan and Bobby Lammie, and Grant Hardie's strategic expertise, forced Italy to concede a point in the fourth end, reducing the deficit to a single point at the break.

Italy blanked the sixth end and added two points in the seventh to rebuild their lead, but Team GB fought back with two points of their own, remarkably levelling the score with one end remaining after a steal.

The match came down to the final end, but Italy held their nerve to secure the win, prompting a deafening roar from the crowd.

"It's an incredible experience, and we need to get used to it," McMillan added, describing the electric atmosphere as "surreal" and "cool," more akin to a football match than a typical curling crowd.

The group stage will determine the teams' fates, with the winner earning promotion, the runner-up entering a play-off, the third-placed team facing a relegation play-off, and the fourth-placed team being relegated directly.

The upcoming group games will mark a reunion for Scotland and Switzerland, who previously drew 1-1 in Cologne at Euro 2024.

Scotland's last encounter with Slovenia was during the 2018 World Cup qualification campaign, when they won 1-0 at home and drew 2-2 away.

The team has not played North Macedonia since the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, when they drew 1-1 at home and won 2-1 away, with goals from Ikechi Anya and Shaun Maloney.
